COALITION MONTHLY NEWS: APRIL 2020
Well, our mortality, business, personal, financial and global fears are now all wrapped up in one, and instead of simply sharing in music and live performances we are sharing fears and emotions with every person on the planet.
We are inspired by our colleagues and their artists as they make statements of encouragement, create special moments and educate their fans on how to work together to combat this nightmare.
Our artists have great power and reach and are letting people know that they are not alone. Here at Coalition Music, with our artists, we will continue to do so and await the day when we can get back to normal and continue to collectively share our love of music and artistry.
Successfully amusing each other even in isolation!
Almost 20 years after its release, Simple Plan’s “I'm Just A Kid” is being revived in a viral trend on TikTok! The #ImJustAKid challenge shows kids and their parents, siblings, couples, and even pet owners recreating their old photos using the song. Over 800,000 TikTok videos have been created and viewed over 1.3 billion times in the app! Since the #ImJustAKid challenge began trending in early April, the song has been streamed an additional 11 million times. With the current state of the world, it's awesome to see people in isolation get creative with this challenge and how our artists' music be a part of something uplifting!

Even though our artists have been in isolation, it doesn't mean they haven't been busy! Among the many activities they've been doing, a lot of them have taken to doing live streams online. Check details below to see when they'll be online next!
Scott Helman has started a live stream series called the "Not-So-Isolated Live Stream Party", and has included guests like Michael Bublé, Johnny Orlando, Gianni Luminati from Walk Off The Earth, The Reklaws, Alessia Cara, Hunter Hayes and more! Follow Scott here to see when he'll be live.
The ladies of Nice Horse are self-isolating with "Wine At Nine" on Facebook every Monday at 9am MST/11am EST, featuring guests such as Clayton Bellamy and Jason Blaine!

DJ, producer, songwriter, voice actor. As one half of Toronto, Ontario's alternative duo, USS, HUMAN KEBAB has seen his DJ career take him across the world over the past decade. When he’s not on stage scratching records while standing on his head, he can be found locked up in his studio doing remixes for artists such as Sum 41, Our Lady Peace, Ferraro, Finger Eleven, and many more. HUMAN KEBAB's debut record will be coming soon.

The Simple Plan Foundation made a $10,000 donation to the Australia Red Cross last month after the band's Australian tour to help those affected by the fires currently raging across the country.
Congrats to Scott on being nominated for 'Single of the Year' at the Juno Awards for 'Hang Ups'!
The CP Holiday Train wrapped up its journey in December, with Scott Helman performing shows from Montreal to Calgary! The train brought in a total of $1,495,060.00 and almost 240,000 Ibs of food in 2019. The overall total now stands at 4.7 million pounds of food and $17.6 million raised for food bands across North America!

Spotlight: The Tea Party
With a career spanning thirty years and nine major-label releases, The Tea Party, composed of Jeff Martin, Jeff Burrows, and Stuart Chatwood, have successfully gained the attention of fans on a worldwide level. In addition to selling over 1.8 million records worldwide, they have toured a countless number of times throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia. Much of the band’s success can be attributed to their larger-than-life stage presence. The Black River EP is the first record from The Tea Party since 2014’s The Ocean at the End. The release is a kickoff to a year-long celebration, as the band will be embarking on their 30th year together in 2020.

Our Lady Peace performed at the Grey Cup Festival on November 23rd in Calgary, Alberta!
Scott started an initiative based around his song 'EVERGREEN' entitled 'The Evergreen Project'. A form on his website called 'The Evergreen Manuscript' has collected testimonies from fans about the climate crisis.
Those testimonies were then illustrated to create a mural to draw attention to the issue so many people are still choosing to ignore.
At this point, the initiative has received over 1000 signatures from people voicing their concerns, frustrations, and fears about the future of the planet. You can read more about the project and sign the manuscript here.
Myles Castello opened up for Bryce Vine at the Opera House in Toronto, ON on Thursday, November 14th.
He also opened for MAC AYRES at the Velvet Underground on November 25th in Toronto, ON.
Nice Horse performed with Brett Kissel and Dan Davidson as part of the Grey Cup weekend at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, AB on Sunday, November 24th.

Movies and TV shows have always been my source to discover new music. My music collection as a teen included soundtracks to John Hughes' classics as well as gems I found through shows like Square Pegs and Twin Peaks. Sources like these fed me a variety of music that the gatekeepers like my local radio station or MuchMusic never played. In this age of Netflix, HBO, and Amazon, music fans like myself are constantly finding new tunes to obsess over. The playlist attached is a mixture of new music I've found as well as some rediscovered classic throwbacks from shows that are set in the past. You'll also see that I really never grew up in my TV tastes as a teen. I'm still a big fan of soaps, superheroes, and juvenile humour 🤓

Spotlight: Scott Helman
Since the May 2017 release of Scott Helman’s full-length album Hôtel De Ville, the four-time JUNO Award nominee has maintained a relentless touring schedule in support of the album and it’s hit singles “Kinda Complicated,” “Ripple Effect” and the gold-certified “PDA.” Beginning with a headlining tour across Canada in the Fall of 2017, Scott then began the new year visiting media in Singapore, Hong, Kong, Japan and Australia (where he played solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne) before heading to Spain and Italy for multi-artist festival shows.
In the summer of 2018, Scott was invited to open for Vance Joy’s five cross-Canada tour dates. Those shows went so well that he was eventually asked to join the entire Vance Joy European tour.
Finding his musical influences in album-focused artists like Arcade Fire, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Cure, Bon Iver and Paul Simon, Canadian singer-songwriter Scott Helman has established himself as one of the country’s leading young songwriters, earning himself a 2018 JUNO Award nomination as Songwriter of the Year.
In 2014, Scott Helman announced himself to the world with the release of the track “Bungalow” as the first single from his debut EP Augusta. The song introduced a fresh new voice to the musical landscape and his versatility led to tours across Canada, playing with the likes of Tegan and Sara, Shawn Mendes and Matthew Good. Opening for Walk Off The Earth on extensive tours of the U.S. and Europe, Scott stood alone on stage and, night after night, won over skeptical audiences and began building an international fan base. In 2015, Scott beat out 11 other artists to be the first to win Spotify Canada’s Emerge program and in January 2016, he topped the Teen Vogue list of voices to look out for that year over the likes of Melanie Martinez and Elle King. By the time Scott went back in to the studio to begin work on Hôtel de Ville he had been nominated for a 2015 MuchMusic Video Award and two 2016 Juno Awards and performed to massive national TV audiences on both award shows. “Bungalow” was certified platinum in Canada and he rang in 2017 with a raucous tribute to Leonard Cohen, performing “Bird On A Wire” in Cohen’s hometown of Montreal in front of 50,000 people and broadcast live on CBC TV.

DJ, producer, songwriter, voice actor. As one half of Toronto, Ontario's alternative duo, USS, HUMAN KEBAB has seen his DJ career take him across the world over the past-decade. Affectionately known as the "after-party before the party" HUMAN scours the world for the best rock and alternative remixes and blends them into an hour-long dance smashup. Spotlight: Nice Horse
Nice Horse is what happens when four bold, brilliant and badass women get together to raise a little hell—and play a little music at the same time. Katie Rox (acoustic guitar/banjo/vocals), Brandi Sidoryk (bass/vocals), Tara McLeod (guitar), and Krista Wodelet (drums/vocals) are out to turn the tables on the country music world and show the guys that they can rock—and party—just as hard. Sure, there are plenty of strong female country artists in Daisy Dukes out there, but try to name another self-contained unit that plays their own instruments and writes songs as potent as “Six String Outlaw”, the band’s roof-raising single “Pony Up”, and the new feminist anthem “Mansplainin’”. Don't forget to check out their latest release, "Good Life"!
There’s plenty more proof on Nice Horse’s aptly titled full-length debut album, There Goes The Neighborhood(emphasis on the neigh!), produced by Jeff Dalziel (The Washboard Union, Brett Kissel), along with the legendary Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue) on a couple of tracks. The band won the 2018 YYC Music Award for Country Recording of the Year, as well as “Group of the Year” and “Video of the Year” (for “Mansplainin’”) at the 2019 Alberta Country Music Awards (ACMAs). In 2018, Nice Horse was also nominated for their first-ever Canadian Country Music Award (CCMA).
Nice Horse’s first major tour was as direct support for Canadian icon Tom Cochrane, and they’ve since toured with other industry heavyweights including Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and The Washboard Union. Additional highlights include major festivals such as Big Valley Jamboree, the Calgary Stampede, and Boots & Hearts – always showcasing their signature high-energy live show.

The late 90's and early 00's were an awesome time for me. I was in a horrible ska band, just got my drivers license, and summers were spent working at Camp Banting. I didn't know what a mortgage was, couldn't tell you the credit card that provided the best interest rate, and my metabolism allowed me to eat pizza every night at 2 AM with nothing to show for it. These are the songs that a middle-class suburban kid from the mean streets of Etobicoke, Ontario chose to listen to - and, in my opinion, they still stand up.

The Tea Party have wrapped the Black River Tour which ended on June 30th in Australia. In total, they performed 54 shows across Canada, the United States, and Australia and traveled a combined 35,250 KMs! Congrats to The Tea Party on a successful tour run this year and receiving a Road Gold!

Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI), originally founded by Coalition Music in 2012, is a not-for-profit incubator based in Toronto with a mandate to help artists and artist managers evolve from starter companies into sustainable businesses through hands-on networking, mentoring and collaboration.
CMI programs consist of Artist Entrepreneur, Artist Manager (delivered in Toronto), AE West (delivered in Calgary), CMI Custom Projects and Bootcamps.
Artist Entrepreneur and Artist Management reside at Coalition Music, which allows direct access to an active music business environment, a community of like-minded artists across all genres of music, touring professionals, artist managers, industry experts and decades of experience and expertise.

For a horrifying short period of time following the events of Sept 11, 2001 airplanes were grounded globally. The fear of ongoing, globally debilitating, terrorism became a real thing that day. Tied in to all this horror, Rob and I suddenly had grave concerns for our business, you see, there has hardly been a single day since the mid 1990s that Coalition Music didn’t have, at least, one of our artists on a plane headed to or from a gig and now not one plane was flying on our planet. I myself fly like crazy and suddenly, indefinitely, the world's airports were crippled.
I seriously began to think, what if the world were to go to shit and my business fell apart? How can I make sure that my family is safe so that we could remain together no matter what happened? My wife and I talked about whether we should find a second “home”, a place to get away to, a place out of the city, a destination that didn’t require getting on a plane, a safe place for our young family - our son was 7 and daughter 5 at the time. So, for $73,000 CDN, we bought a small piece of land by a pretty lake in Muskoka, Ontario.
Flash forward to now. Global and domestic problems are still prevalent (abundantly so) but generally the world’s people are resilient. International business and travel eventually carried on and our business didn’t fall apart. As the years passed we built a beautiful cottage on that sweet property and our fear-driven hideaway became the place where our family convenes, lets loose and enjoys dancing and drinking together. The kids are in their 20’s now and have amazing partners. As a ridiculous music lover, I made sure that music could be heard everywhere up at the cottage – inside, outside, in the forest and by the beach. The biggest problem we face up there is deciding which of the 6 of us chooses the songs for our long summer days. We grew to love each others taste in music and so we decided to spend this past winter building a communal family summer playlist!
It's diversified, it’s multi-generational, it’s summery and fun…..and it’s a constant work in progress. Here is what we call "Happy Together".

Spotlight: Our Lady Peace
When Mark Van Doren, the American poet and teacher, wrote his famous work, "Our Lady Peace" in 1943, he couldn't have imagined the concept of rock'n'roll, let alone that a Canadian rock group would adopt his title for their name. Composed of Raine Maida, Duncan Coutts, Steve Mazur and Jason Pierce, Our Lady Peace is one of the most successful bands in Canada today. The band has sold over 5 million albums worldwide, won four JUNO Awards and ten Much Music Video Awards - the most MMVA's ever awarded to any artist or group. They have been a consistent player on the world stage with constant touring, and have had continued success releasing albums throughout the past few decades, with 2018’s SOMETHINGNESS being the most recent. Our Lady Peace is set to support fellow 90's alt-rockers Bush and Live on their upcoming massive North American tour, The ALT-IMATE Tour, which runs from June 6th through mid-September. Of the upcoming trek, OLP’s Raine Maida commented, “The ALTI-MATE Tour is magic. Coming up in the late 90’s we had all played together on random festivals in America but never actually toured together. To have this opportunity now for both us and the fans is a dream.”
Our Lady Peace will then headline the revival of their signature Summersault festival, this time with Bush and Live, as well as Dear Rouge and Human Kebab as support. The Summersault festival was first launched by Our Lady Peace in 1998 at Molson Park in Barrie, Ontario to over 35,000 fans, and included performances from the band themselves, Moist, I Mother Earth, Sloan, Esthero and Treble Charger. In 2000, Summersault returned with a national tour, featuring Our Lady Peace, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, The Catherine Wheel, Treble Charger, Eve 6, Sum 41 and Deftones on the bill. "I love road trips! Ask anyone who knows me, I love to drive. I love cars. I love bikes. You name it, if it has a motor, I’ll want to take it for a spin. Long road trips are especially my favourite. I’m currently starting to plan my trip to California next winter (over 4000 kms one-way) and I’ll be listening to soooo much music...oh yeah, I also love music.
These songs are arranged in a sequence that reflects the various moods I’m in when I’m on the road. I usually start off feeling happy and optimistic about the journey ahead and want to ease into the trip…I put on some music that gets me thinking about the journey ahead as I start to clear my mind. The tempo gradually starts to increase and the volume gets a little louder…the music gets a little more aggressive and that usually gets my adrenaline going as I continue to push forward (always doing the speed limit, officer)…by the end of this playlist below, I’ll have to fill up the gas tank again, grab another coffee and hit the road again!"

'Kinda Complicated' was Scott's second single to be certified gold in two months! It is also the second single from 'Hotel De Ville' to be certified gold after 'PDA'!

What the quartet—Noel Johnson (rhythm guitars/vocals), brothers Nathan (lead guitar/vocals) and Trevor Crook (drums/vocals) and Jared Craig (bass/vocals)—share is a love of pure, honest music stemming from their small-town backgrounds. Drawing inspiration from groups like The Eagles, Avett Brothers and The Band. Each member of Johnson Crook contributes equally, injecting their unique personalities into the overall sound built on four voices.
After touring their release, ‘The album’, for the last year they are back in the studio working on a new single due to release late springtime 2019.

Spotlight: Myles Castello
The rising R&B singer from Scarborough, Toronto’s sprawling easterly area, who feels as comfortable in the studio as he does performing on the stage, is garnering attention with his moody yet danceable cadence of club-friendly music. His song “Bad Company” dropped last autumn. The track, produced by The Uccis, showcases the young R&B singer and producer demonstrating vocal prowess, next to modern, dance floor sensibilities. An infectious self-assuredness permeates the track with a glint towards his city and its bright light.
Myles is now gearing up to drop a new single, followed by more new music throughout the year. The track, titled “Way Off,” is an ode woven around a near-universal young lovers quarrel,
with listening payoff presented on a refrain built over a knocking drum beat.
His eye towards weaving stories from his own experience, marred by catchy, danceable melodies and an obvious student of highly-executed pop combine in Myles Castello,
making his mark in 2019..

Spotlight: The Tea Party
The Tea Party is a Canadian rock band with blues, progressive rock, Indian and Middle Eastern influences, dubbed "Moroccan roll" by the media.
Jeff Martin grew up in Windsor, Ontario, just across the Detroit River from the home of proto-punk and the Motown sound; he was also influenced by his blues-loving father. He formed the Tea Party with multi-instrumentalists Stuart Chatwood (bass, keyboards, mandolin, and harmonium) and Jeff Burrows (drums, percussion). Martin himself plays guitars, sitar, hurdy gurdy and harp guitar. Consequently, the trio's sound marries rock with elements of Middle Eastern, Celtic and Mediterranean music. Their 1993 album, Splendor Solis, sold over one million copies in Canada; The Edges of Twilight followed, trailed in 1997 by Transmission.
The Tea Party were nominated for 22 Much Music Video Awards, and were awarded three People's Choice Awards for Favourite Music Video: two for "The River" and one for "The Bazaar". "Sister Awake" director Curtis Wehrfritz was nominated at the 1996 Juno Awards for Best Director; "Release" director Ulf Buddensieck won the Best Cinematography Award at the 1998 Juno Awards.

• Justin Nozuka released his album 'Ulysees' on March 25th of 2014, and was nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards on March 27th of 2011 for his Album 'You I Wind Land and Sea.'
• The Tea Party released their third studio album 'The Edges of Twilight' on March 21st of 1995.
• USS released their album, 'Questimation' on March 9th, 2009, as well as released their single 'Work Shoes (Acoustic)' on March 10th of 2017.
• Our Lady Peace released single 'Thief' on March 21st of 1994. They released their debut album, 'Naveed', on the March 22nd, 1994.

HIGHLIGHTS of the Month
• Scott Helman just released Episode 4 of The Hotel Sessions: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" feat. Alessia Cara! Watch the video here. His music video for "Hang Ups" was also nominated for a Juno award for "Video of the Year"! Watch it here.
• Scott recently announced The Hang Ups 2019 Tour! For tickets to his shows across Canada, visit Scott's website! Additional dates were just added, and supporting acts have been announced!
• Myles Castello announced that he will be supporting Scott Helman at select shows on The Hang Ups 2019 Tour. Get your tickets here! Also, make sure you check out his official music video for 'Bad Company'!
• We're also excited to share that 'Bad Company' was chosen as Stingray Canada's Trending Track for February and March!
• Nice Horse brought home two awards at this year’s Association of Country Music in Alberta Awards. They won both ‘Group of the Year’ and ‘Video of the Year’ for Mansplainin’!
• The band hosted a Facebook live 'Question and Answer' last month on January 16th. If you missed it, you can watch the full interview by clicking here! Nice Horse is also playing this month in Courtenay, BC at the Winter Apres Ski Festival on February 2nd! Click here for tickets.
• Simple Plan was featured in FYI Music News, announcing they had a total of $225,000 in donations for 2018. More than 30 charitable organizations received funding for those in need, and this brings the total amount the Simple Plan Foundation has raised to $2.5 Million since the band began the foundation back in 2005. • Simple Plan will also be performing at Disney World in Orlando, Florida from March 17th-20th as part of the Garden Rocks Concert Series. You can find information and reservations by clicking here!
• USS and Scott Helman recently performed at a memorial concert for Mike 'Beard Guy' Taylor. The concert honoured the 'Walk Off The Earth' keyboardist who passed away in late 2018. The memorial concert was held on Sunday, January 13th, 2019 in Burlington, ON. Watch the full memorial concert here.
• The Tea Party reissued their album 'Splendor Solis' on vinyl recently which hit #1 on Amazon Canada in the vinyl section of the store. You can pick up the vinyl here! The band also reached #4 on the Alt Rock Chart in Canada last month! Congratulations!
• The Tea Party started their 'Black River' tour on the 27th of December 2018, and picks back up on March 16th, 2019. To view the dates of shows and purchase tickets, visit the band's website!
• The Proud Sons will be touring with fellow Coalition band, The Tea Party, over the next few months and you can get your tickets by clicking here! They have also released their music video for 'Company'!

Spotlight: The Proud Sons
The Proud Sons are just trying to do justice to their name, and it's working.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba rock ‘n’ roll five-piece named themselves after a vow to do their members’ late fathers proud, and their era-spanning music is providing much proof they’re succeeding. The band’s signature four-part harmonies wouldn't be out of place in Laurel Canyon in the '60s, their '70s southern rock vibe brings the party, and the I-did-my-baby-wrong/my-baby-done-me-wrong narratives of their songs hearken back to the themes that have been the foundation for so much R&B and country & western music. It’s classic rock ‘n’ roll made contemporary.
The songs on the band’s self-titled four-song debut EP could fit just as comfortably on a playlist with Chris Stapleton, The Wild Feathers, and Blackberry Smoke as they would with The Eagles, Black Crowes, and The Rolling Stones. "Rock 'n' roll music should be fun," says Proud Sons lead singer Ryan McConnell, "Expect good music and a good time."
